A deficit of 266,389 votes did not deter the determined sole candidate, who tweeted:
"We question this mayoral election result and believe it is crucial to ensure that the voting is accurate and fair."
The municipal secretary certified the election results a day after the questionable request, frustrating any hope of a miraculous Gong mayoralty.
But the legend of Gong was born, and now someone is trying to capitalize on it.
On Wednesday, an auction was launched on eBay for a campaign t-shirt of Gong at an astronomical price, with an initial bid of $4,444.44 and a "Buy It Now" price of $24,444.44.
Gong was the 44th candidate on the by-election ballots.
