A firefighter dies battling a forest fire in British Columbia.

British Columbia confirmed today that a female forest firefighter on the frontline in Revelstoke died while battling a fire yesterday.

The British Columbia union representing forest firefighters expressed that this death is a reminder of the dangers of their work, and they confirmed that an investigation has been opened by WorkSafeBC and the RCMP.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, but it is known that she is a young woman.

Currently, there are several wildfires in the Revelstoke area, two of which are considered out of control. This firefighter's death marks the fourth in British Columbia since 2010 related to forest fires.

Prime Minister Trudeau referred to this tragic death through his social media. In a message posted on Twitter, he said: "The news from British Columbia that one of their firefighters lost her life is devastating. In this difficult time, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues in the firefighting community. We must never forget the risks these heroes take every time they run towards danger. To all firefighters in British Columbia and across the country, thank you. We are inspired by your courage and grateful for your service."

Premier David Eby also offered his condolences to the woman and her family through a statement.

"Day after day during the wildfire season, our firefighting teams do everything they can to keep people and communities in B.C. safe. This tragedy serves as a heartbreaking reminder that they often risk their lives to do so," Eby said in a statement.

The BC Wildfire Service says that this fire season is expected to be the worst on record in the province.

As of Friday morning, there were approximately 360 active fires in B.C. The province has requested an additional 1,000 foreign firefighters to join the frontlines.

Dozens from the United States and Mexico have already been deployed, along with federal resources.
