Prosecutors announced Thursday that actor Alec Baldwin and a gun specialist will be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer who was killed in 2021 on a New Mexico film set.
Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies issued a statement announcing the charges against Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who were supervising guns on the set.
Halyna Hutchins died shortly after being wounded during rehearsals for the western "Rust" at a ranch outside Santa Fe on Oct. 21, 2021. Baldwin was pointing a gun at Hutchins when the weapon went off, killing her and injuring the director, Joel Sousa.
Authorities said Deputy Principal David Halls signed a plea agreement to the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, who led the initial investigation into Hutchins' death, described "a degree of negligence" on the film set. But he left decisions about possible criminal charges to prosecutors after turning over the results of a yearlong investigation in October. That report did not specify how the live ammunition ended up on the film set.
