The House of Commons committee dealing with transport issues met this afternoon to discuss an opposition-backed request to hold an emergency hearing to discuss the treatment of Via Rail and airline passengers this vacation season.
The meeting which started around 3:30 p.m. seeks to analyze and question various stakeholders on the chaos experienced by passengers, including an appearance by the Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra.
Numerous passengers had trouble reaching their destinations this holiday season amid widespread delays and cancellations, including the derailment of a Via Rail train that caused cascading chaos, and hundreds of Sunwing passengers who were stranded in Mexico after the airline cancelled flights.
Initially, the Liberals indicated a desire to convene a meeting to hear from Sunwing and Via Rail about the "unacceptable" delays and cancellations. Now, opposition MPs want to expand the committee's work to also hear from the CEOs of other major airlines, as well as the airports now dealing with baggage backlogs.
