Donald Trump paid no taxes in his last year in office

Updated: Dec 28, 2022

Donald Trump did not pay a single dollar of income tax during the last full year of his presidency as he declared losses from his extensive business interests, according to tax figures released by a congressional panel.

The records, released late Tuesday by the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee after years of struggle, show that Trump's income, and his tax liabilities, fluctuated dramatically during his four years in the White House.

The records run counter to the former Republican president's long-cultivated image as a successful businessman as he mounts another White House bid.

Trump and his wife, Melania, paid some tax during all four years, the documents showed, but were able to minimize their income taxes in several years, as Trump's business income was more than offset by deductions and losses.

The committee questioned the legitimacy of some of those deductions, including one for $916 million, and members said Tuesday that the tax returns lacked details. The panel is expected to release blacked-out versions of his full returns in the coming days.

Trump refused to release his tax returns during his two presidential runs and his campaign for office, despite the fact that all other major-party candidates have done so for decades.

The committee obtained the records after a years-long struggle and voted Tuesday to make them public.
