Skating rink at Toronto's Harbourfront to close for good

Harbourfront's iconic skating rink at Toronto's Queens Quay will close permanently and be replaced by a plaza, management confirms.

On its website, Harbourfront says the rink was closed this winter season for construction work to "update and refresh this area." The skating portion of the site is also completely empty.

"We look forward to welcoming you back to the reinvented space once construction is complete in the summer of 2023," he wrote.

"While it will not be a permanent rink as it was in the past, there will be opportunities for temporary winter skating activations within the new space in the future," said Harbourfront Center spokeswoman Natasha Laird.

According to reports, the fate of the rink was announced at a presentation Tuesday to the York Quay Neighborhood Association, with a lack of funding cited as the reason for closing it.

Laird says the plan is to have construction of the new facility completed by the end of the summer.

"This is part of a larger upgrade and revitalization that is happening at our Harbourfront Center campus, which includes upgrades to our main building (currently underway) and upgrades that have already been made to our wonderful outdoor concert stage," Laid added.
