Tornado in Ottawa.

Environment Canada confirms that at least one tornado has struck the community of Barrhaven, approximately 20 kilometers south of downtown city.

At around 1 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services reported receiving reports of a tornado in the vicinity of Umbra Place, not far west of Highway 416. Ottawa police also indicated receiving similar reports.


At least 50 homes in the Umbra Place area, near Cambrian Road, were affected by the storm.

Ottawa Fire Department stated that firefighters were going door-to-door in the hardest-hit areas to check on residents and shut off gas and hydroelectric power in several units.


Ottawa Paramedics reported around 1:45 p.m. that they were aware of one person with a minor injury. Ottawa police have set up a family reunification center at the Minto Recreation Complex on 3500 Cambrian Rd.


Around 1,800 Hydro Ottawa customers are currently without power in the area. Authorities also warn of possible road closures due to fallen cables or trees.


Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for communities such as Kanata, Orleans, and downtown around 12:50 p.m. Other areas had tornado watches.
