The Office of the Prime Minister announced that it will follow the example of its allies known as the Five Eyes (New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States) and establish a ministerial committee on national security and intelligence.
The lack of such a committee has been pointed out by the national security community as an oversight, especially in light of recent controversies regarding foreign interference.
The new National Security Council would serve as a forum for ministers to deliberate and address issues of significant concern for Canada's national and international security.
Today, Prime Minister Trudeau explained the details of the initiative.
Trudeau added that the announcement regarding how this council will function and who will be part of it will be made in the coming weeks.
The decision to create this new panel comes amid months of scrutiny over the federal government's handling of allegations of foreign interference and a series of revelations about federal security and intelligence organizations facing challenges in keeping up with emerging threats and communicating among agencies.
