At least 29 people died in the violence unleashed on Thursday in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa following the arrest of one of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's sons, the government revealed on Friday.

The Secretary of Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, pointed out that of the 29 dead, a dozen belonged to the Mexican Armed Forces and 19 to the criminal groups that generated the violent disturbances. Sandoval celebrated that, according to current information, no innocent civilians lost their lives.

As for the number of wounded, the Army official counted 35 military personnel injured by firearms, as well as damage to several land and air vehicles of the Armed Forces.

Twenty-one members of organized crime were also detained, Sandoval detailed. The operation during and after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán in the early hours of Thursday morning involved 3,586 members of the Armed Forces, who also confronted the violence unleashed in the streets of cities such as Culiacán (Sinaloa's capital), Los Mochis and Mazatlán.

The Army chief acknowledged that after the arrest, violent acts were generated, such as 19 blockades and armed aggressions, including the Culiacan Airport and the air base number 10.

The Mexican government also informed today that the extradition to the United States of Ovidio Guzmán, one of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's sons most wanted by the US, will be a slow process, as he also faces criminal charges in Mexico.
