Google said on September 29, 2022, that it would shut down its Stadia streaming service and give refunds to players who would be affected. For people who don't know how the shutdown will work, here's a guide to when and how Google Stadia will shut down its servers and how to get your hardware and software back.
When Will the Google Stadia Shut Down The Servers?
On January 18, 2023, Google Stadia will shut down its servers. At the time this was written, the exact time of the shutdown had not been said. The Stadia Store and all in-game microtransactions stopped working on September 29, 2022, so players can no longer buy games. Players who pre-ordered games that haven't been released yet will have their orders canceled, and those who have already been charged for their pre-orders will get their money back.
Players can keep playing all the games they own until that date, but Google says "there will be some gameplay issues during this time,", especially with games that have microtransactions. All in-game progress will be lost when the servers are shut down if the game doesn't support cross-progression on other platforms. This won't be the case for any games made by Google Stadia's now-closed internal studios, though.
How to Get a Refund for Google Stadia?
All Google Stadia hardware, including controllers, the Founders Edition, the Premiere Edition, and the Play and Watch with Google TV packages, can be returned to the Google Store for a full refund. Google has stated that "most" of this hardware is not required to be returned to them, but that more information on how to get a refund for Stadia hardware purchases would be released in the coming weeks.
All Google Play purchases, including games and DLC, are eligible for a full refund at any time, however, subscriptions to Stadia Pro are not. Members with ongoing Stadia Pro subscriptions will continue to have access to their Pro library and other membership benefits until the service is shut down in January, but will not be charged again beyond that date.
Because "each of the countries and different situations" will require a unique return procedure, Google is still working out the kinks in its refund system. On the other hand, refunds will be issued back to the original payment method without further action from the customer required by January 18, 2023. Google will send an email to everyone who has purchased Stadia hardware and software. Don't disregard the email and its instructions, as customers who have lost their initial payment method will be given the option to select a different payment method.
